Levels of
competition and exercise scenarios
There will
be a variety of exercises being used by USK9 Group in protection and obedience
competitions that will test the handler/dog reaction in a variety of real life
situations.
The team will be
tested in control, response to assist his/her Handler and on dogs desire to
stay in the fight to protect his Handler. The handler should prepare his/her
dog to demonstrate restraint and control for both NON- contact threat, as well
as to react quickly upon contact of an aggressor to the dog’s Handler. There will be distractions during obedience
NO AGGITATION. There will be 3
protection scenarios in ENTRY, 4 for LEVEL 1 and 5 for LEVEL 2 and PRO. The exercises will be similar in context, but
VERY different in application showing various levels of pressure consistent
with the level competing (higher the level the more pressure applied)
During the
Obedience Portion, Corrections are not going to be tolerated. For each
correction given, the Judges will subtract points. If the corrections are
considered harsh by the Evaluators, the Team may be asked to leave the field
and not be allowed to continue the trial.
Equipment-Dogs
will be allowed to wear collars, dependent on level(s) of competing for safety
reasons. Training collars (choker)
allowed on entry and level 1. Levels 2
and pro level, leather collars only. NO
SHOCK/ELECTRONIC COLLARS ALLOWED PERIOD.

ENTRY LEVEL PROTECTION EXERCISES-
THREE PROTECTION
EXERCISES WILL BE USED
Greeting of a Stranger
Entry Level
In this
scenario, the Handler and Dog will walk down the field approaching a pre
designated area. This area can be a bench, OR a chair. The handler will be carrying bag to be placed
at the seated area. PRIOR to decoy’s attempt to steal bag, casual conversation
will be had between handler/decoy. Dog
should hold position placed in by HANDLER and NOT move. Decoy will attempt to call dog from STAY
position. After attempt to call dog, decoy will move towards package in attempt
to steal. Handler can warn decoy to
stay away, while encouraging dog to bark to deter decoy. Decoy will be aggressive in trying to obtain
package, however ONLY bite will be on rag/tug in prey.
Surprise Attack on
Handler
Entry Level
In
this scenario, a Decoy or Decoys, will be positioned behind a pre-designated
hiding place (a wall, blind, bush, vehicle etc.) The Handler is going to enter
the field with his/her dog as directed by the Evaluator. At some point a
masked decoy will appear, the decoy has option to walk past without any
aggression or immediately present aggression toward the Handler. The Dog
must immediately protect his/her Handler if the Decoy shows a threat toward the
Handler, if the Decoy walks passively the Handler will continue walking and the
dog cannot aggress the Decoy. Only ONE Decoy will threaten the handler.
The Decoy may have a weapon or noise item to oppose the dog. During the
aggression care will be used as to not strike the dog in the face or ears with
the object of opposition. When instructed by the judge the Handler will tell
the Decoy to” stop fighting the dog”, and decoy will run off.
Courage
Test
Entry Level
In this
scenario, once directed by the Evaluator(s), the Decoy will begin walking
toward the dog team. The Decoy will yell out toward dog and handler as the
decoy continues to move in their direction. At this time the Handler can give
the Decoy a warning to stop, or he may get bitten by the dog. The Decoy will
have an object of opposition and continue to move TOWARD Handler and dog. Once
the Decoy is within 20 feet from the dog team, the Decoy will charge toward the
dog. Dog should stand his/her ground not
backing behind handler. Decoy will
present rag/tug to engage dog in contact.
Should the Decoy be able to make dog retreat, exercise will end with
decoy going into prey drive...

the SAME time. The Decoy or Decoys may approach the Handler in a loud yelling
manner, a quiet non -threatening manner, a staggering happy manner etc. The ONE
aggressive Decoy will show a clear aggression in assaulting the Handler. The other non-aggressive Decoys will run
away as if scared of loose dog UPON DOG EXITING TO PROTECT but pose NO THREAT
to handler or dog (however, these Decoys should be ready to absorb the dog).
Handler can call for his dog when attacked.
Handler will have approx. 5 seconds to re-direct to correct decoy. Should the dog aggress the wrong Decoy, and
NOT respond to correct decoy within allowed time, ZERO points for this
exercise, being the dogs job is to protect handler. Should a dog exit the vehicle prematurely,
the Handler may give a verbal command to stop his dog, if the dog stops on the
verbal command, the exercise can continue with a 50% exercise point deduction. Should the dog refuse to stop and aggresses a
passive Decoy, the score will be zero for the exercise.

running away from dog. Handler MUST stop
